CarProd Eras
Every player is slotted into one of three eras based on where their CarPeak landed - the three-season window where they produced at their highest sustained level. Within-era rankings (Skater Rank, Fwd/Def Rank) compare players against the cohort that played the same game under the same conditions.
Modern 2014 – present
Speed-and-skill era.
Highest-pace era in NHL history. Structure-and-skill game built around skilled forwards driving offence; teams play four lines, defencemen lead the rush, and goals are up across the board. Goaltending is at its most refined and league-wide save-percentage gaps have narrowed.
Examples: Connor McDavid, David Pastrnak, Nathan MacKinnon, Auston Matthews, Leon Draisaitl, Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes.
Post-Lockout 2005 – 2013
Hooking-crackdown era.
Following the 2004-05 lockout the NHL cracked down on obstruction, hooking, and interference. Scoring jumped, power plays became a weapon, and a generation of skilled forwards came of age inside the new rulebook. The shootout was introduced and the salary cap reshaped roster construction.
Examples: Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Toews, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Sedin.
Pre-Lockout through 2004
The clutch-and-grab + dead-puck era.
Two distinct chapters - the wide-open offence of the 1980s and the obstruction-heavy "dead-puck" run that followed in the late 1990s and early 2000s. League-wide scoring fell off a cliff in the mid-90s, peaking goaltenders dominated, and the rulebook tilted toward defensive structure.
Examples: Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic, Jaromir Jagr, Patrick Roy, Bobby Orr, Mark Messier.
Multi-era players
Why is Crosby in Post-Lockout?
Era is anchored to the player's CarPeak window, not their last game. Crosby's CarPeak seasons (2009-10, 2010-11, 2013-14) all land in the Post-Lockout era, so that's where he's slotted - even though he's continued to produce at a top-line level into the Modern era. The classification rewards where the player did their best work, not where they last suited up.
Same logic applies to Ovechkin, Malkin, and other long-career stars whose CarPeak sits in their original era.
CarProd Career Production
GP82-weighted average of every qualifying NHL season's points-per-game percentile, normalized within each position (forwards vs forwards, defensemen vs defensemen). The most stable measure of a player's sustained production across their career - rewards consistency over short peaks.
CarPeak Career Peak Production
Weighted average of a player's best three NHL seasons by points production, extended with additional seasons until the window covers 200 games (normalized to 82-game seasons). Captures the level they consistently delivered at their peak - not a single fluke year. The 200-game floor stops a one-off hot stretch from defining the ceiling.
CarProd Model Definitions
All production below is measured as each season's points-per-game percentile within the league and within each position. Forwards are compared to forwards; defensemen to defensemen - so Cale Makar's Elite tag reflects how he stacks up against other blueliners, not how his point totals compare to McDavid's.
The scoring is normalized across eras - a top-10% scoring season lands in the same tier whether it happened in 1985, 2003, or 2025. Each player is also slotted into one of three ERAs based on where their CarPeak landed, so within-era rankings compare like-for-like cohorts.

How productive were they across their whole career?
GP82-weighted average of every qualifying NHL season. Rewards consistency - a player who produces at a second-line level for 12 seasons scores higher than one who has 3 elite years and 5 mediocre ones. The most stable measure of what a player actually was.

How productive was the player at their best?
Best three NHL seasons by points production, extended with additional seasons until the window covers 200 games (normalized to 82-game seasons). Their sustained ceiling - the level they consistently delivered at their best, not a single-season high. The 200-game floor stops a fluke season from defining the peak.

CarProj Career Projection
What level of career production do we expect this player to reach?
A forward-looking estimate of where their career production will land. For prospects, it draws on historical probability tables built from career-complete players across 47 feeder leagues - what comparable profiles became. For NHL players still developing, it forecasts career-end production from how similar-aged peers have progressed. Not shown for established veterans whose careers are largely written.

How well did they goaltend across their whole career?
Games-played-weighted median of every qualifying NHL season's save percentage. Rewards durability and consistency - a goalie who runs a starter crease for 8 seasons grades higher than one with two Vezina years and a string of average backup work. The most stable measure of what they delivered between the pipes.
